This tour of Topkapi Palace was on a very high level. My guide Eren was extremely attentive. He answered all my questions, suggested breaks in shady areas, and even took me to areas he thought I would like. Loved seeing the Chinese porcelain in the imperial kitchen. I’m very impressed.

Do you know what 'Topkapi' means?
In Turkish, ‘Topkapı’ means “Cannon Gate”. The Sultan Mahmut I had commissioned a new building as part of the palace complex, named ‘Topkapusu Sâhil Sarâyı’ (Cannon Gate Shore Palace). Unfortunately, that section burned down in a fire. Nevertheless, its name stuck, and soon the Turks were referring to the entire complex as ‘Topkapi’, forgetting about the burned-down section.
