Everything you need to know before visiting Topkapi Palace

The Topkapi Palace is an Ottoman imperial complex that served as the residence of the sultans. Construction began under Mehmet the Conqueror in 1453, and it remained in use until the 19th century. Visitors can see how sultans and their families lived and learn about their daily life and Ottoman history. The palace complex is also known for its beautiful architecture featuring colorful İznik tiles.

What can you see at the Topkapi Palace?

Harem

The word “harem” means private or forbidden, and this is where the sultans’ families lived. The sultans’ concubines also lived here, sometimes even up to 300 of them!

The Second Court

The Second Court has beautiful gardens you can walk through, relax in, and imagine what it was like for the royal family in the past. The Palace Kitchens are located on one side, and the Imperial Council Chamber on the other. The council would meet here to talk about important matters, and the sultan was able to listen in through a gold grille in the wall.

Treasuries

The Outer Treasury, close to the Imperial Council Chamber, exhibits weapons and armor. The Imperial Treasury is located in the Third Court and showcases jewels, the Sword of Süleyman the Magnificent, the Topkapı Dagger, and the Kasıkçı (Spoonmaker’s) Diamond, an 86-carat rock!
